HAKUDO INK

|

With translucence of blackness in its own gradation HAKUDO INK is raw and graceful with a spine of centering quality. The scent may be linked to a smell of dawn to the air that frees from boundaries of the immediate world. Layered on an earthy foundation the profile offers dark and rich fluidity dry and moist temperaments and a hint of warm smokiness that acts to highlight its distinctive clarity.

MARUHIRO

the HAKUDO HASAMI EDITION

The distinctive metallic glazed porcelain tea cups are fired within the natural beauty of the mountains in the town of hasami in nagasaki prefecture, well known for their artisans who have been manufacturing ceramics for over four centuries.

|

UNIQUE ENCOUNTER

We visited the pottery and atelier of kyohei baba in hasami town and this inspiring experience made us encounter to the distinctive metalic glazed material that has still never seen the light of day. Baba kyohei was also open to give this special object a new role and it developed into our collaborative project.

|

A TRADITIONAL MATERIAL

Hasami porcelain edition is created in a porcelain with a manganese saturated oil spot glaze. The temperature of the kiln decides the characteristic of irregular metallic shades and patterns of the surface, which gives each cup a very unique texture and personality. Its presence resonates with deep & smokey qualities of the hakudo scent that also evokes various textures of earth and nature, and together they create a clear and tranquil mood.

REVIVED IN A CONTEMPORARY OBJECT

The yunomi (湯のみ) cup with matching lid has been traditionally used in japan to welcome guests and express gratitude when serving tea. Such a beautiful gesture is easily abandoned nowadays, and this detachment from the tradition became a source of inspiration to breathe new life into the almost forgotten item and to revive the subtle yet rich contentment in our everyday life.
